Dr. Henry Lai, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and former editor of Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine, has compiled an extensive collection of studies examining the biological and health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), including radiofrequency radiation (RFR) from wireless devices and extremely low-frequency (ELF) EMFs from power lines and appliances. Spanning over 30 years of research (1990-2022), this comprehensive resource highlights potential concerns such as oxidative stress, DNA damage, neurological effects, and links to cancers like leukemia and brain tumors. Dr. Lai's work underscores the importance of ongoing investigation into the health risks associated with EMF exposure, fueling discussions on public safety and the need for evidence-based regulatory limits.
As of February 2016, 220 scientists from 42 countries signed an international appeal addressed to the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO), urging greater protection from non-ionizing electromagnetic field exposure. The appeal highlights scientifically established health effects and criticizes the inadequacy of existing international guidelines, such as those from ICNIRP, which are currently endorsed by the WHO. Among the nine key recommendations, the appeal calls for public education on the potential health risks of electromagnetic energy, alongside practical harm reduction strategies. It also advocates for medical professionals to be informed about the biological effects of electromagnetic energy and trained in treating patients with electromagnetic sensitivity.
